PAID SOPHOMORE YEAR RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY!!!

As our freshman year comes to an end it is time to start thinking about getting into research. Maybe you wanted to take your first year slow or didn't get into the RISE Program or wanted to do summer school this upcoming summer. There are many reasons why you could have put off research programs like RISE and that's okay because here's your second chance! If you started in a lower math your first quarter (MATH 6A or MATH 5) then you qualify for PERSIST! This is an excellent opportunity if you started in a lower math because you may want to dedicate this summer 2019 to summer school to catch up on classes so that next year you'll be more ahead or "on-track". So what exactly is PERSIST and what would you have to do?

PERSIST stands for...........

Promoting Engagement, Retention, and Success in STEM Training (PERSIST)

The dedication is in the name where we try to set students up for success by pairing them with a peer mentor just for this program where you'll get guidance and support to mentor you into getting into a research lab as well as other skills such as professionalism and college skills. We also have specific seminars that are exclusive just to students of the program where you'll be close to Dr. Jack Eichler, meet with Dr. Michael A. McKibben, (CNAS Divisional Dean of Student Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Geology) and Dr. Sue Wessler (Neil A. and Rochelle A. Campbell Presidential Chair and Distinguished Professor of Genetics). Just these interactions alone with very distinguished faculty will ensure your success in this program. If you perform very well, you may even secure a letter of recommendation so I would encourage you to work hard because although this opportunity is very structured, it all depends on your personal drive!

DID I MENTION YOU GET PAID $1,5000 PER QUARTER & $5,000 IN THE SUMMER?

The specifics of each quarter are mentioned in the following link and I encourage you to watch the presentation in this link here.

INFO SESSIONS:

  • 4/23 12-1PM Pierce 2301

  • 4/24 12-1PM Pierce 2301

Now Junior Gianhu Nguyen participated in PERSIST the summer of her sophomore year and here is what she had to say!

"Among the many opportunities UCR has offered me, I am grateful to have been a part of the PERSIST program! Coming into college, I did not know what research was and what it entailed. It was through this program that gave me the exposure to this academic discipline and helped me gain experience in a field of research that I'm interested in. From getting insights on writing abstracts to presenting a research study, the program also provides the chance for students to meet various faculty members and learn about the details of their research, an opportunity I would not have been able to come by. Aside from the dynamic academic enrichment that PERSIST provides, the program also opened the door for me to meet new people, expand my network, and to gain a mentor, which all have enhanced my overall college experiece and impacted my growth as a student and a person." -Gianhu Nguyen

DEADLINE TO APPLY IS MID-MAY. FIND THE APPLICATION AND MORE DETAILS HERE: https://cnasscholars.ucr.edu/persist.html

Good luck this Spring Quarter!

First-Generation Resources

Highlanders, welcome back to the CNAS Scholars blog ! I hope midterm session has treated everyone well. In this week's edition of the blog, we will be discussing a very important series of programs known as First-Gen Initiatives and what resources are available to any undergraduate students interested.  The term "first-gen" describes a student who is first in their family to study in a four-year institution. Just by the name alone, the main goal of the First-Gen initiatives is to ensure first-generation students are able to engage and stay motivated in their journey towards student success. This includes different individualized programs, specialized campus support, and available student opportunities. UCR's first- cohort was shown to have outstanding first-gen student support by the Center for First-Generation Student Success, a nationally recognized source; more information can be found here . For future reference, the links below are different sections of the Fi...
