Hello everyone! Welcome to Week 7. This blog post will discuss about the California Teach-Science and Mathematics Initiative or CalTeach-SMI and what they offer to STEM undergraduates who are interested in becoming a future science or math teacher in Calfornia. In general, this program provides students with an ability to go to middle and high schools to learn from current teachers at those respective schools; more specifically, CalTeach-SMI has four areas to engage in - pedagogical training, pre-service mentoring, networking, and financial support. More information for the program can be found here.
The peer mentoring program in CalTeach-SMI allows for students to ask questions and learn more about the ins and outs of becoming a future STEM teachers. These peer mentors are also motivated to become future STEM teachers and can provide a good network on the professional pathway to becoming a STEM educator; these mentors have different majors and experiences that will offer complete support in this program.
In terms of profession development, CalTeach-SMI lists various professional organizations available on and or off-campus to further the aspirations of becoming a STEM educator. In addition, there are resources to study for the examinations a STEM educator must take to be credited such as the CBEST and CSET. Different workshops, trainings, conferences and seminars are arranged every quarter either to prepare for subject test preparations, have a larger discussion, or have guest speakers speak on pertinent topics.
CalTeach-SMI also offers financial support for various classes like NASC 192 and EDUC 3/4 and other necessary exam and classroom materials. There are various scholarship opportunities as well to apply for.
Overall, CalTeach-SMI is a great support and guidance program for undergraduates pursuing to become future STEM educators! Thank you for your time and see you in the next blog post.
