CNAS Scholars Peer Programs

 


Hello everyone, we hope that your Week 5 is off to a good start. Today we will be discussing the CNAS Scholars Peer Programs. The application to join is currently open, and closes February 4 at 4 PM.

There are three different roles within this program - Peer Mentors, Peer Academic Leaders, and Peer Advisors. In order to be eligible to apply for any of these positions, you are required to have completely a full year in a CNAS Learning Community, and be a sophomore, junior, or senior in Fall 2022. You should display involvement in on and off campus activities, ability to be a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, and being able to multitask and being self-motivated. The minimum GPA to be a Peer Mentor or Peer Advisor is a 3.0, and a 3.2 to be a Peer Academic Leader.

Peer Mentor is a year-long paid position, and the responsibilities include: serve as a paid employee for the 2022-23 academic year, serve as a resource to current students in the Freshman Scholars Learning Communities, caseload of 25-30 mentees will be assigned, notify CNAS Scholars Coordinators of student concerns (i.e. health, behavior, emotional), promote diversity and university policies and procedures, attend weekly meetings with advisor/coordinator for NASC093 prep in the fall, attend and facilitate two discussions on college transition and academic success topics in the NASC093 courses during fall quarter with an advisor/coordinator, participate in CNAS Scholars Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 training and events (workshops during fall, winter, and spring quarters, Discover Day and Highlander Day, Highlander Orientations, and advising center tabling), assist in 1-3 hours of tabling/workshops biweekly, and complete quarterly self-evaluations.

Peer Advisor is a year-long volunteer position, and the responsibilities include: serve as a resource to current CNAS students through drop-in advising hours, notify CNAS Scholars Coordinators of student concerns (i.e. health, behavior, emotional), promote diversity and university policies and procedures, attend weekly PA meetings with LC Coordinators, attend and facilitate discussions on the college transition and academic success topics in the NASC093 course during fall quarter, assist with workshop presentations Winter and Spring 2023, and to complete quarterly self-evaluations.

Peer Academic Leader is a fall-only paid position, and the responsibilities include: serve as a paid employee for the Spring and Fall 2022 terms, serve as a resource to current students in the Freshman Scholars Learning Communities, notify CNAS Scholars Coordinators of student concerns (i.e. health, behavior, emotional), promote diversity and university policies and procedures, attend weekly meetings with LC coordinators for NASC093 prep in the fall, attend and facilitate two discussions on college transition and academic success topics in the NASC093 course during fall quarter with a fellow CNAS Scholars PAL, meet with a NASC093 grader each week, complete a quarterly self-evaluation, and host one drop-in session for NASC093 students each week.

First-Generation Resources

Highlanders, welcome back to the CNAS Scholars blog ! I hope midterm session has treated everyone well. In this week's edition of the blog, we will be discussing a very important series of programs known as First-Gen Initiatives and what resources are available to any undergraduate students interested.  The term "first-gen" describes a student who is first in their family to study in a four-year institution. Just by the name alone, the main goal of the First-Gen initiatives is to ensure first-generation students are able to engage and stay motivated in their journey towards student success. This includes different individualized programs, specialized campus support, and available student opportunities.
