CA Teach-Science & Mathematics Initiative

Hello everyone! We hope you are having a great Valentine's Day and start to your Week 7. Today we will be discussing the CA Teach-Science & Mathematics Initiative (CalTeach-SMI) program here on campus of STEM undergraduates preparing to become future STEM educators. It is a UC systemwide program and patterns with local school district to provide future STEM teachers access into middle and high school classrooms where they have the opportunity to be mentored by current California science and math teachers.

CaTEACH-SMI provides four general areas of services for their program participants. These areas include early pedagogical training, pre-service advising and mentoring, professional networking, and financial support. For current UCR students, they must first attend an SMI Informational Session (which require RSVP in advance) in order to start the process of becoming an active program participant.

This program provides a vast array of resources for students who are seeking experience in becoming an educator in the fields of science or math. Their Peer Mentor program is open to all active SMI students, and allows them to expand their pre-teaching preparation experiences by networking with more advanced SMI student participants. To request a peer mentor, SMI students should complete the request form

Additionally, they provide online resources for SMI students looking to take STEM Teacher Exams including the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSTET). They also provide resources regarding both on- and off-campus professional organizations related to teaching. These professional organizations offer various benefits, including networking, discounts, scholarships/ grants, conferences/ conventions, online access to forums, and magazines/ newsletters.

We hope you were able to learn something new about the CaTEACH-SMI program today and are able to make the most of this resource! Have a great week!
